Confronting Stagnation with Gratitude

COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK

What are some reasons you’ve been putting off a significant task or project?

When taking a Coach Approach with one of your team members who might be experiencing a bout of procrastination, it’s helpful to get curious about the underlying reasons.  Procrastination is a common human tendency, but the reasons behind it can vary widely, which is why a coaching conversation can help!  Some additional, probing questions you might ask to help them get clear about what’s getting in their way, are:

  • What thoughts or feelings arise when you think about starting this task?

  • What would happen if you completed this task? How would you feel?

  • What’s stopping you from taking the first step?

Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.

Happy Birthday to Kirk (left) and Spock (right)! 🎉🥳🎊 On August 1st, these incredible canines celebrated 10 trips around the Sun. We are so impossibly grateful to have these boys in our lives. They have enriched so many of our experiences, including our wedding day pictured above. Perhaps better than any other photo we have, this one captures the chaos and joy of our family.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

As a coach, I've seen firsthand how cultivating a sense of awe and wonder can be transformative. These feelings can enhance well-being, boost creativity and productivity, and foster a deeper connection with the world. 🌠🙌

But in our fast-paced lives, it can be all too easy to get caught up in the daily grind and overlook the magic all around us. Which is why I often partner with clients to find practical tools that help them reconnect with the present moment and find joy in the everyday.

How can you cultivate a sense of awe and wonder? 🌌✨

As a Coach, I work with my clients to set transformational goals for themselves and focus on their future outcomes.  This doesn’t have to be exclusive to attending to the here-and-now.  Practicing mindfulness, being grateful for the things you already have, and cultivating an abundant mindset, are all part of the coaching journey.  Even while you’re dreaming up future opportunities for yourself, don’t forget to smell the roses!

What can you do to cultivate a sense of abundance in your life?

I came across this terrific article about Adult Development theory.  It’s a fantastic tutorial on the various stages of development according to Harvard psychologist Robert Keegan, a pioneer on the subject.  This work is incredibly fascinating, and I use the concepts in the way that I coach - particularly helping clients understand how to achieve self-authorship and transformation.  Give it a read!

BE A FORCE MULTIPLIER!

Take a moment to focus on gratitude with your team! You could have every team member mention one thing they’re grateful for in your next team meeting. Or you might start an email chain or group chat about Gratitude and include the video link about Awe & Wonder

However you do it, consider starting a conversation with your team about how a sense of awe and wonder can positively impact their work and home lives.  You might ask questions like:

  • Reflecting on your most recent experience of awe, what insights or lessons did you gain that could be applied to your work?

  • In what ways can experiencing awe contribute to a positive team culture and collaborative environment?

  • What strategies can you employ to intentionally seek out awe-inspiring moments in your professional and personal life?
