What support do you need to succeed?

COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK

“What support do you need to succeed?”

This is a terrific question to ask yourself, or others you might be coaching, to get clear on what is needed to cross the finish line.  Getting clear on what resources are needed is a healthy part of goal setting.  This includes getting clarity on ‘accountability.’  Coaches often serve as Accountability Partners who will check in with the client, and ask probing questions like:

  • What new insights have you discovered?

  • What barriers presented themselves?

  • What other support or resources would be helpful?

Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Before I turned 16 and got my driver's license, I had a pretty skewed idea of what it would be like to actually drive. Honestly, I thought it looked easy. Even on I-95 near DC, where I grew up. I thought people made too big a deal out of the whole ordeal. Just manage speed, read signs, use signals, and you should be good to go, right?....

Needless to say, the reality of driving on a freeway with thousands of other drivers all trying to get where they wanted to go is a little more nuanced and anxiety-inducing. It takes real skill and care. You're not just worrying about you and your own vehicle. Driving in public requires taking in what others around you are doing and making adjustments accordingly. But there is simply no way I could have fully known and understood all that until I had that driver's license in my pocket and my hands at 10 and 2. Giving someone ownership over something - real skin in the game - is the lifeblood of true empowerment.

Until someone is actually responsible for and accountable to their actions and work product, they are less likely to be fully invested and committed to doing whatever it takes to reach the finish line.

What can you do to help your teams reach a greater level of empowerment?

Ok, this one hit me hard today. Terrific advice from the “Father of Management,” even if it is incredibly difficult to follow. I think it’s particularly helpful for my clients and leaders who are keen on being efficient and might not be attending to the things that matter most.

What tasks are you working on that might not be worth your time and efforts?
