The Parliament

WELCOME TO THE PARLIAMENT!

Hey Wise Owls!

It is with a full heart that I welcome you to the very first issue of The Parliament Newsletter! Earlier this year, I began the exciting (and only mildly terrifying) journey of starting my own coaching business. After more than two decades of developing leaders in a corporate setting, it was time to dream bigger than supporting and growing talent at just one company. I wanted to use my experience and the lessons I’ve learned along the way to be a true force multiplier - to plant seeds in organizations around the world, one curious leader at a time. The Parliament is one of many ways I hope to do just that.

Our mantra at Thomas Greek Coaching is BE USEFUL! Simple but powerful. The Parliament is an extension of that desire. What you’ll read, watch, and listen to in the coming issues will revolve around meaningful and practical content from me and other experts, authors, and creators I love.

My hope is that this newsletter will serve as a source of insight and inspiration for you as we all work to become the best versions of ourselves.

Thanks for being with me on this journey.

COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK

“What would happen if you did (or didn’t) do that?”

Fear of the unknown is a big driver of stagnation in my clients. As human beings, we are so good at imagining the worst possible scenario! And when those we let those imaginings go wild, we can find ourselves paralyzed by the decisions in front of us.

By using this simple prompt, we can help those in our care “test the outcomes!” Many times, walking through a few thought exercises, where we highlight the possible good, bad, and neutral outcomes of the choices before us, can help solidify a client’s view on how they can proceed in a way that is productive AND in line with their values. Consider the following scenario where using this prompt might be helpful.

  • Scenario: A team member is dealing with ongoing conflict with another team member.

  • Prompt Use: "What would happen if you actually did address this conflict head-on? And what would happen if you didn't?"

  • Probing Questions:

    1. "What approaches can you take to facilitate a resolution?"

    2. "What are the potential long-term benefits of resolving this conflict?"

    3. “What are some questions you might have for the other person?”

Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Kaizen, a Japanese philosophy meaning "continuous improvement," can revolutionize how we set and achieve our goals. I use it with my clients all the time to help them bite-size their big, audacious dreams and ambitions into incremental goals that are more manageable. By incorporating Kaizen into your own goal-setting process, you'll find yourself achieving more with less stress 💪🚀.

As a Coach, I hear my clients say things like “I am…
…a terrible public speaker"
…an anxious person"
…unhealthy"

Sound familiar? What if you could reframe that thinking, shake off the shackles of that narrative identity, and choose something else? What would you choose?

BE A FORCE MULTIPLIER!

If you found any of this content inspirational or motivating, the best way to pay us back is to pay it forward!

Here’s one way you can be a force multiplier this week:

  1. Send this week’s quote (or another quote that inspires you) to your team the day before a team meeting.

“The words ‘I am’ are potent words; be careful what you hitch them to. The thing you’re claiming has a way of reaching back and claiming you.”
    - A.L. Kitselman

  2. During the team meeting, facilitate a conversation about the quote.

  3. Set an open tone that encourages participation (there are no wrong answers!), and share your own insights and feelings.

  4. Consider asking questions like…

    • How do the statements we make about ourselves influence our mindset and behavior?

    • Can you share an example of a time when a positive or negative self-statement impacted your performance or attitude at work?

    • How can we use the understanding of this quote to foster a more positive and empowering team culture?
