COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK

“What is this really costing you?”

This can be a powerful question offered up in many contexts.  You might ask this of a team member who’s putting off a big decision, looking to change a habit, or when they seem to be ‘staying the course’ despite evidence they might consider a change.

This question can also be potent when dealing with relationships that have stalled.  You might also ask the inverse: “What is it costing you NOT to make this change?”

Get curious and help your team member look at the true costs of staying the same, and whether the cost to invest in a new outcome is worth it!

Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Do you ever find yourself paralyzed by your to-do list, wondering where you should start? 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️

You're not alone - this regularly comes up with my clients.

One of the tools I recommend to help them prioritize tasks is the Eisenhower Matrix. This simple-but-mighty framework can help you and your team eliminate unnecessary work so you can focus on the things that matter most.

Perfection can be paralyzing.

As a Coach, my clients are often high-performing and driven leaders who set high expectations for themselves. It can be helpful for them to examine when their efforts have exceeded their return on investment - and when they haven't. Sometimes, the quest to get it perfect means sacrificing more than it’s worth. Embracing the concept of "good enough" can be the right-sized solution, allowing them to achieve balance and maintain well-being.

What areas of your life or work could benefit from embracing "good enough" instead of perfect?

“Thomas’s coaching was, hands-down, the best development I have had in my 20+ year military and civilian career. I am not exaggerating when I say that I left this program a better person, which in turn, led me to be a better leader.”

BE A FORCE MULTIPLIER!

Consider going through the Eisenhower Matrix with your team!

Send them this week’s video in advance of the discussion and carve some time out at your next team meeting to discuss.  Be prepared to take an inventory of some of the tasks your team is responsible for and place each task in the corresponding segment of the matrix.  Consider questions like:

  • What tasks can we eliminate or reduce?

  • What tasks can we delegate to others on the team, with an eye towards development?

  • What can we do to make sure we’re focused on the tasks that truly deserve our attention?
