What Are You Afraid Of?
COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK
“What are you afraid of?”
I’m not talking about spiders and snakes, though don’t get me started on those!
Oftentimes the thing getting in our way or keeping us stuck is a subconscious fear or limiting belief about ourselves. We may not like to acknowledge them, but identifying our inner fears is the first step towards overcoming them. Fears of inadequacy, irrelevance, being rejected, or of failing might surface after some careful introspection. This can be a powerful prompt to try on with your team member but remember to create a safe and supportive environment when tackling their inner fears.
A few probing questions to consider:
What situations trigger this fear?
What effect does this fear have on you?
How are these fears holding you back?
Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
I'm a night owl 🦉. But when I first started my own business, I decided to try to shake that up a bit and began getting up early (well....early for me at least). And while I was able to make that work, it was less than ideal. No matter how hard I tried to convince them otherwise, my mind and body were/are just not designed to be at their best in the morning.
In his book WHEN: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Dan Pink delves deeply into this topic and helps the reader realize their own sense of good timing. And this is something I discuss often with my clients when they're feeling stuck. It's not a silver bullet, but focusing on when we do certain tasks, instead of just why and how, can help us realize more success in scheduling and managing our days.
What can you do to re-examine the "whens" in your life?

“The biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” – George Bernard Shaw
My brother and I are best friends these days, but trust me when I say that was not always the case. We're only a few years apart, but when we were kids, that seemed like decades. We were nothing alike, and it felt like we didn't even speak the same language sometimes. Everything would have been much easier if he would have just listened to his big brother and did what he said! 😏🤣
Luckily, both of us have become better communicators than we were as kids. A big lesson for me has been that the act of transmitting information isn’t enough. Leaders are adept at pushing information out, but real communication involves a lot of listening to make sure the message is received, understood, and acted upon as intended. As a raging Extrovert, I’ve had to learn to slow down and focus to deepen my listening skills, which has helped me to be a better communicator. This includes being aware of body language and other non-verbal cues.
What’s one thing you can do to slow down, listen deeply, and improve your communication?
