What's the First Step You Could Take?

COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK

“What’s the first step you could take?”

Getting started is often the hardest part of transformation.  Helping your client envision one way to make forward progress can be helpful in getting “unstuck.”  The next time your team member is procrastinating with an assignment or seems uncertain about where to being, get curious and help them engineer their first steps!

Additional questions might include:

  • Are there any potential obstacles or challenges you foresee in taking that step?

  • How do you think this initial action will impact the overall outcome?

  • What other first steps have you considered?

Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Have you ever had that experience where a song or commercial jingle you'd recently heard gets stuck in your head on an endless doom loop? 🙋‍♂️ Sometimes it's not the worst feeling in the world if it's a song you happen to like, but other times it can be anywhere on a scale from mildly annoying to downright maddening.

While frustrating, a melody playing on repeat in our heads is relatively harmless. But getting certain thoughts or emotions playing over and over can have a much more detrimental effect on how we feel. Especially given that many of them are simply untrue. This is something that comes up a lot with my clients, and the Sedona Method is one of the tools I equip them with to help them stay focused on the things that matter most to them in life.

Who would you be if you could let go of that unwanted thought or feeling?🐡

One of my favorite quotes from Albert Einstein goes, “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” I think Einstein is encouraging us to shift our focus from individual achievements to the positive impact we can have on the world around us.

My motto is “Be Useful.” I enjoy success but personally find success more fulfilling when it’s a byproduct of service. This quote aligns with the idea that lasting fulfillment comes from meaningful contributions that have a ripple effect, rather than short-term achievements that may be fleeting.

These ideas of meaning and fulfillment come up all the time with my clients. Finding a cause they really connect with and can give their time, talent, and treasure to often helps them realize a deeper sense of purpose. And giving back can be a ton of fun, especially when done with people you love.

What can you do to be of value to others?
