COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK

“What led you to that conclusion?” 

You can help your team members by serving as a compassionate thought partner.  Encourage them to check their rationale and decision making by getting clear on what led them to their conclusions.  You might get curious and ask them to explain their thinking, how they feel about their decision, and how their decision/conclusion aligns with their values.  All of this might help your team member feel more confident in their thinking or rethink how they perceive the outcome.  Here are a few more probing questions that might help:

  • What other possibilities did you consider?

  • What role did intuition play in your decision making?

  • One a Scale of 1-10, with 10 being more confident in your conclusion, where are you? 

Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.
