What three aspects about yourself describe you best?...

COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK

“What three aspects about yourself describe you best?”

This is a terrific question that gets to the heart of a team member’s strengths and values.  It can help them reflect on how they want to be seen by others, and in turn, uncover more about what drives them.  It can also increase self-awareness, allowing them to articulate what sets them apart and what they bring to the team. With time, this process can build confidence and foster a sense of ownership in their roles.

You might consider asking this question as you’re getting to know a team member, or when helping to coach them on a career trajectory.  As leaders, understanding these key aspects can help us as align responsibilities with individual strengths, create a more inclusive work environment, and build stronger, trust-based relationships within the team. Here are a few companion questions you might ask:

  • How do these three aspects of yourself affect your relationships with others?

  • How do these three aspects of yourself influence your decision-making?

  • How do these three aspects of yourself contribute to your overall sense of well-being?

Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.
