What assumptions are you making?...

COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK

“What assumptions are you making about this person or situation?”

This can be a great question for uncovering hidden biases, clarifying perspectives, and fostering more objective thinking from whomever you’re coaching. It encourages your team members to examine the underlying beliefs that are shaping their interpretation of events and interactions.  We all fall victim to our own biases and assumptions, and it can be hard to stay objective.  You can help your team members by being a thought partner, helping them assess their perspective and open up new possibilities.  Consider asking these additional probing questions:

  • "What evidence do you have to support these assumptions?"

  • “What would happen if your assumption were incorrect?"

  • "What's another way to interpret this situation?"

Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.

The Art of Storytelling

Storytelling isn’t just about telling tall tales (though, anyone that has worked with me at length knows that I like a good hyperbolic story 😅)—it can also be a way to inspire, connect, and lead.

Mastering the Public Narrative framework can help you move people—not just to think, but to feel and act. It’s a skill every leader, changemaker, and communicator can sharpen to become true masters of their craft.

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson's quote is a timeless reminder of the power we have to shape our own lives. It encourages us to be proactive, to make conscious choices, and to strive to become the best versions of ourselves. Our choices matter.

We can decide to be kind and curious. We can decide to be uplifting and supportive. We can decide to be better tomorrow than we were today.

What will you decide to be?
