What Do You Love to Do?

COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK
“What Do You Love to Do?”
While it sounds like casual conversation, this is an amazing Coaching question to unlock a team member’s core identity, intrinsic motivation, and sources of energy.
It intentionally sidesteps questions about skills, responsibilities, or what one should do (don’t should on yourself!), and goes directly to the heart of what brings a person joy and vitality.
Questions like "What are you good at?" or "What are your skills?" often trigger a team member to recite their resume or list socially acceptable talents. They are analytical questions that often invite a prepared, intellectual answer.
By contrast, "What do you love to do?" is an emotional and somatic question. Leaders will often see a physical change in the client when they answer: their posture might straighten, their eyes might light up, and they speak with more energy and passion. It connects them to a feeling, not just a fact.
This is a terrific question to ask during career counseling, a mentoring session, or during a developmental discussion.
Here are a few follow-up questions to consider:
"Tell me more about that. What specifically do you love about it?"
"When was the last time you did that?"
"What gets in the way of you doing that more often?"
Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.
