COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK

"What is the other person's perspective in this situation?"

As a leader who coaches, you’re in a terrific position to help your team members when dealing with conflict, communication challenges, or relationship dynamics. Questions like this encourage empathy, broaden understanding, and foster more constructive interactions.  You might consider asking this question the next time a team member solicits advice or assistance when proposing an idea that affects other team members or when they come seeking help in a conflict.  You might ask some of these follow-up questions:

  • "What might be important to that person in this situation?"

  • "What might that person be feeling?"

  • "What are their possible needs or concerns?"

Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.
