What's Holding You Back?

COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK
"What’s holding you back?"
This is a direct and powerful question designed to help team members identify the obstacles preventing them from achieving their goals or living their desired life. This kind of question might lead to external barriers, like time or a degree. But often this line of inquiry unveils internal blockers, such as limiting beliefs, lack of self-confidence, or perfectionism. As leaders, you’re in a terrific position to help coach your team member move beyond their limitations. Here are a few add-on questions you might ask:
What past experiences might be influencing your current situation?
What support do you need to overcome this?
What small step could you take today to start moving forward?
Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.

Metaphor in Coaching
Metaphors are powerful tools in coaching conversations. They help make sense of abstract thoughts and feelings, unlocking deeper self-awareness and new perspectives.

One of my favorite quotes is from Annie Lennox. She shared, "Ask Yourself: Have you been kind today? Make kindness your daily modus operandi and change your world."
What a powerful sentiment! I think it's especially true for those of us that call ourselves leaders. Research from Harvard Business School and Oxford University shows that compassionate leadership boosts employee well-being, engagement, and productivity.
Another study from Gallup found that employees who feel cared for are 71% less likely to experience burnout and 3x more engaged at work.
Kindness is not just a virtue; it's a way of being that can transform our lives and the world around us. It's a call to action, urging us to make kindness our daily practice and contribute to a more compassionate world. And for leaders, it also happens to be a strategic advantage.
