What Would You Fight For?

COACHING PROMPT OF THE WEEK

"What Would You Fight For?"

This is a powerful question designed to uncover a team member’s deepest values, passions, and what truly matters to them. It goes beyond surface-level desires and taps into the core of their being, revealing what they're willing to defend, protect, and dedicate themselves to.  Though this question can be unsettling at first, it can help a team member get clear on who and what matters most to them, and can be a terrific conversation when coaching for career choices or to help craft a team member’s development plan.  Here are a few other questions to consider:

  • What are you willing to sacrifice for this?

  • What steps can you take to start fighting for this today?

  • What obstacles might you encounter, and how will you overcome them?

Remember that coaching isn’t telling! Coaching is about staying curious and making space for those in our care to become confident authors of their own stories.

“Say yes. In fact, say yes as often as you can. Saying yes begins things… Saying yes leads to new experiences, and new experiences will lead to knowledge and wisdom.” – Michael Hogan

As leaders, it's often our job to assess risks, weigh options, and sometimes default to a certain level of “no” to maintain control. But what if saying yes more often unlocked the very growth we seek?

Saying yes sparks momentum. It opens doors to new experiences, fresh perspectives, and unexpected opportunities. In my years as both an executive and a coach, I’ve seen firsthand how a simple “yes” can change the trajectory of a career, a team, or an entire organization.

Hogan's quote is a call to embrace opportunities, step outside our comfort zones, and allow new experiences to shape us, leading to greater knowledge, wisdom, and a more fulfilling life.

What’s one opportunity, idea, or challenge you can say "yes" to?
